 In America the year of 2008 will be remembered as one of widespread flooding. From first of the year right through hurricane season it has been a wet one for many areas. While some regions still suffer from drought, others have their share of rainfall and storms. Insurance companies will screaming for a while to come as claims continue to pur in from home and business owners needing the funds to restore and rebuild from all of the damage and destruction.

Iowa comes to mind first as we remember back to the early spring months. Widespread and heavy rainfall that would not stop tired to blanket homes, businesses, and farmland under a covering of water. Cedar Rapids had some of its worst flooding to ever take place there and Iowa City did not fare much better. There were numerous people killed in these floods and many people had to register for federal assistance. Thousands were forced to evacuate at that time and recovery was slow, but response to the worst hits areas has improved somewhat since the Katrina disaster.

Tropical Storm Fay in August 2008 had plenty enough strength to wreak havoc in parts of Florida. The storm broke a fifty year old record in Melbourne, Florida by dropping at least eleven inches of rainfall in only twenty four hours. At least a couple of hundred homes there were flooded with up to four feet of water. Melbourne was by far from the only city affected and the President, George Bush, declared the entire state of Florida a disaster area on August 21st. Homes were flooded and tornadoes were reported to have added to the destruction in some areas.

The latest water filled disaster came in the form of Hurricane Ike. It was a storm said to be around six hundred miles wide and has had a terrible impact on the coastlines of Texas and Louisiana. The city of Galveston suffered flooded downtown streets, power outages, and blown out windows from the 110 mile per hour winds. Coastal surges reached at least fifteen feet in many places. Even though Ike only became a strong category two storm, he left behind no shortage of devastation.

Clean up in the Texas and Louisiana areas has only just begun and the total cost of the storm has not yet been named. It is sure to be in the millions of dollars if not billions. Everyone affected by all the flooding that has gone on so far this year will probably breathe a sigh of relief to see this year go. Who knows what the next spring season will bring, but hopefully it will not be nearly as wet as the last one.

Every year more and more pollution is being put in the air and in the last few years it has done a lot of damage to the ice lands. Did you know that in 2003 the ice lands of Greenland, Alaska, and Antarctica has melted over 2 trillion tons of ice due to global warming? This is causing animals to lose their homes and food supply. It is also causing them to die and is causing them to become extinct. Satellites have shown how bad it is getting and how much damage is being done.

The satellites are showing and proving that it global warming is occurring because of the data that is being sent to scientists. The satellites are showing that the ice is disappearing and the water levels of the ocean are getting higher. The ice is still melting and it is damaging the environment. Greenland, Alaska, and Antarctica are melting at different rates, some not as much as the others, but still at a bad rate. Some years are better than others because not so much ice has melted, but every year is different, some really bad, others slightly.

Alaska is not as bad as Greenland, but still bad enough that it has lost 400 billion tons of ice in 2003. Did you know in the past few years due to global warming the sea water levels have risen one-fifth of an inch? If this keeps up, the ice will all melt and it can bring floods to other part of the world due to the rise of sea levels. The water is also expanding from the melting of the ice because it is getting warmer. The animals that live in the cold must have it cold and have to have the ice to live. Did you also know that due to the warmer climate, the glaciers are also shrinking?

Our planet is getting new damage everyday due to the pollution and the melting of ice. Do you know what kind of pollution is in the air which causes global warming and our ice to disappear? It is thought that greenhouse gases are what are damaging the environment. Here are three of the greenhouse gases, methane gas, carbon dioxide, and nitrous oxide these are what do damage to our world. People have to stop polluting the air because it is damaging the earth and the way we all live and survive.

 Usually during the coldest months of the year, if we are not at work, the one place we had normally rather be is at home. Our homes are our havens during cold winter weather and we depend on them to be warm and dry. Most of the time they are but, if you have not prepared properly for the coldest weather, your home could become a place of tragedy when it comes to frozen water pipes.

Frozen water pipes are one of the biggest headaches that homeowners end up having to deal with when temperatures plunge below the freezing mark. Water stays in the incoming lines and if a pipe is exposed to freezing temperatures for an adequate amount of time, that same water could freeze, expand, and burst a pipe.

If you turn on a tap inside the house and no water will come out, you very well could have a frozen pipe somewhere. Sometimes the water will flow freely in one area of the house and the tap can be frozen up in another. It is necessary to locate the frozen pipe and check it for ruptures before you attempt to thaw it out.

Sometimes you might not even know a pipe has been frozen until the temperature rises and the pipe thaws on its on. If it got a rupture when frozen, you will know it soon enough as the water thaws because that is when the flooding will occur. When this happens outside the home, it might not be as bad if it is in the crawlspace under the house because it might not really damage anything, but if it is the basement, attic, or inside the home, it can be disastrous.

The only way to prevent pipes from freezing up in the winter time, inside or outside of the home, is with proper precautions. This means that every pipe should be insulated with a pipe wrapping to protect it. You could choose heat tape to this or use foam wraps that are specifically designed for pipe insulation.

Insulting your pipes should be done well before any cold weather sets in. That way you will not have to be under the house doing it during the coldest temperatures. You will know that your home will be that warm and dry haven you want it to be during the winter without any rude interruptions like flooding and really expensive plumbing repair bills.

When a hurricane is coming, some people board up their houses to protect their home from getting destroyed. They board up their doors and windows very tight to protect their homes from being damaged from the hurricane. When you board up your home, it can minimize the damages that can be caused to your home. It is good to have hurricane shutters and hurricane windows on your home because these will help lower the damages and lower the risk of losing your home. Make sure you have flood insurance that covers any water damages cause from floods, hurricanes, heavy rain, or anything that can cause it.

When a hurricane comes, it will bring huge amounts of water that will flood the streets, homes, make mudslides, and it will have heavy rain and strong winds. The strong winds can knock over trees, cause water to move faster, and it can make rain feel like rocks when it hits your body. It can ruin your house by taking pieces off your house like the shingles. It can also rip off your doors, tear boards away from your home, and it can knock over a trailer if the wind is strong enough. Also, if the wind is really strong, it can tip over your car and pick you up off the ground.

Have your gas tank full or close to full so you can get out of there as soon as possible. You need to board up your basement doors if you have one that leads outside because it can do some major water damage if you don’t. Protecting your houses with these thing or boarding it up may save your home and may even save your life. If a hurricane is coming, all you can do is board it up as fast as you can and get out of there to safety. When you board it up, your things will stay in your house, and you will not lose anything unless your house gets taken by the water.

It is also a good idea to put plastic around the windows so water cannot get in the cracks in the windows. Put it around the outside out the doors. This is another way to protect your home from a flood. But the plastic needs to be under the boards so no water can get though the cracks between the wood. If you have insurance, it is a good idea to raise the insurances before a hurricane hits your town. This way you know that everything will be covered and you will be taken care of. The reason for getting hurricane windows is because when the wind is high, it can break the windows to your house and things can fly in your home.
