The filter also leaches cadmium, arsenic, and lead, which causes even more pollution. When the butts are not disposed of in the proper receptacles, both humans and animal life are compromised by these chemicals. Studies have shown that cigarette butts in water have caused defects in marine life, and these chemicals have also been found in the intestines of fish, birds, and other marine animals.
