Mold Prevention In Your Home

Keeping your home clean should be a top priority on our to-do list. Unfortunately, because of work, family and children, school, and everything else, cleaning has taken the backseat. Cleaning is key to maintaining a presentable and healthy home and also plays a key factor in your health and the health of your family.

If you have ever dealt with mold, you know how easy it can grow back. Stubborn and persistent, mold can show up in any room of your house at any time. Although it is more likely to show up in rooms where there is water, such as your kitchen, bathroom, laundry room, and garage, it is not uncommon to see it growing on the walls or carpet in your living room or bedroom. If you find yourself having to deal with mold on a constant basis, it could mean that your home is the perfect breeding ground for it to grow on. Even though you have killed the mold, it can recur if the environment in your home invites it.

Mold needs three things for it to grow: moisture, warmth, and food. Mold needs to be stopped from the source to prevent it from growing again. Rooms, particularly the bathroom, kitchen, and laundry room, should have adequate ventilation so all the moisture can escape. Any moisture that is left will most definitely result in mold growth. If these rooms are already equipped with an air ventilation system and mold still recurs, then consider getting a stronger fan. If any of these rooms have a window, then open it up.

Clean your home on a regular basis. It may be hard to get around to it, but the health of your home and your family is at stake. Make sure you vacuum regularly to get rid of dust mites and other allergen-inducers. If you decide that your carpet needs cleaning, either hire professionals or follow directions exactly if you’re cleaning it yourself. Clean your bathroom and kitchen on a regular basis. Wipe down spots in your kitchen that have been exposed to food with a disinfectant to kill any bacteria and germs.

All plumbing should be checked on a regular basis to ensure there are no leaks. Leaks will cause mold growth and will rack up your water bill. For areas that are harder to access, consider hiring a plumber to check on these pipes. There is nothing worse than a pipe that has been leaking inside your walls or underneath your home.

Water Damage New Orleans – Black Mold Health Hazards

without comments

Hurricane Katrina was the name of the monster storm that hit New Orleans several years past. There were thousands of people who lost their homes, cars, and all of their belonging in this massive hurricane. Here it is several years later and the damage has still not been cleaned up everywhere there was destruction. The amount of black mold that is still there is immense.

Thousands of homes were under water more than just a few hours. It went on for days and weeks before the water started to recede. The amount of devastation that was left was literally something the residents will never forget. An entire city was underwater so long and weeks later they were aware of the hazards of black mold. It was a shocking thing to see when things started drying out. Black mold was everywhere and those that had it in their homes can tell you just how bad it really was.

Black mold can cause cancer, memory loss, and severe respiratory problems. There are homes that are just sitting there still crawling with this black mold growing inside like it was designed into the home.
Some homeowners that vowed to stay and try to salvage their property and belongings, have became sick from the affects of the mold. Mold on a scale this big is much more devastating than finding a little dab growing under your kitchen sink.

Feeling for the victims of new Orleans, we can only learn from the tragedy of what has taken place.
Having gathered all the facts and reports on the affects of black mold on such a destructive level, researchers may be able to help fight this nasty bacteria that we have become to know as black mold.
As for the victims of hurricane Katrina, it may take even longer for them to be able to forget the storm that left the black mold that they had to deal with.

New Orleans is such a great city in our country and many people want to see it restored to what it once was. Abandoned homes and other building that are infested with black mold will have to be torn down eventually. It will take take a long time to get everything back to the way it once was, but everyone who lives there has not given up. Just like other cities, New Orleans is still a home place where people have their roots and the thought of living anywhere else is impossible for them to consider. It will take more than hurricane Katrina and a lot of black mold to run them out.

Water Damage Tampa – Black Mold Issues

without comments

Once again the residents of Florida have been hit by hurricanes this past year and many find they are dealing with mold. Florida is what you might call a wet state. The residents are surrounded by water all year and when a hurricane comes and goes, the water seems to stick around for a while. If you are a resident of Tampa, which is located at the bottom of the state, you can really be affected by black mold. It is one of the many destructive elements left from hurricanes or just wet weather in general.

Black mold is something that most of us have seen in places like our bathroom, kitchen, and basement areas, but not anything like these residents might have to deal with. When a hurricane hits, the wind is fierce with blowing heavy rain. The water gets into places in our homes that most of us would not believe. This can result in black mold beginning to grow in an area that is not always visible.

Living in this beautiful area can prove to be costly when it comes to dealing with damage hurricanes can do to homes and businesses and the black mold they can leave behind. Even when water is cleaned up from structures that were flooded a little or a lot, mold gone undetected can travel though out your home like it was invited in to stay. Their are some companies that will come out and test your home for mold. It can save you thousands of dollars if the black mold is found early on and not left to spread everywhere.

If you are dealing with mold from a recent hurricane, water damage from a plumbing issue, or just a moisture and humidity problem, you can try some products to eliminate it. Things like mold and mildew paints, cleaners and stain remover will help, but if you have it growing like a weed that just will not stop, then it might be time to call a water damage company to have the problem addressed. They are prepared to handle this type of job from start to finish.

Trying to eliminate black mold that has spread in a home many times proves to be more than a homeowner can handle, this is why an expert should be called in. After you have the mold eliminated, you can use paints and other home products that are resistant to mold. You might not ever be able to stop Mother Nature from throwing another wet fit, but you can use products that will help lessen the risk of mold growing when she does.

Mold Damage – Drying Flooded Floors Correctly To Prevent It

without comments

When you have had to deal with a lot of water on your floors because of a flood of some sort, you should know how important it is to make sure all of the water is gotten up thoroughly and dried out. If there is any or even a little moisture at all that is not dried out completely, it will not only destroy your carpets if you have them, but everything else underneath it. We might not think about the water that could still be in the sub flooring and the floor joists. This wood could still be holding a lot of water and this is one major reason a home can develop mold after a flood. This mold will be allowed to grow because we might never see it. This left over moisture can sit in this wood for a long time, causing the wood underneath a floor covering to not only have mold, but to actually rot as well.

By the time most of us think about the shape of the wood underneath, the damage is done and the mold will also be there. The mold can live and spread as long as the moisture is there and it has food to feed on. The flood might be what gets it started, but if there is enough continuing moisture in the home it will only get worse. It will keep growing and can cover all of the walls inside and out, eventually covering your whole house. Using a dehumidifier after a house flood of any kind is a good way to get the moisture out of the air.

Most of the time, this mold will end up being black mold, which is toxic to humans and animals. It is important to inspect hidden places for remaining water or moisture after a flood. When the mold is fond and eliminated, you do not want any returning. This could happen if your home holds a lot of moisture because it is not ventilated properly. Using exhaust fans in the kitchen and bathrooms help to reduce the risk of mold even if you have not had a flood.

If you are building your home from the start, you will want to put a sealant on the wood of your floors and a sealant in the concrete of your walls. If you were to have any water seep underneath these places with this sealant there to protect them, you will stand a better chance of not having to deal mold. You will want to put in paperless drywall that resists mold. There are other mold resistant products available today that are antimicrobial. Counter tops, floors, drywall, insulation are just a few such items. If you have a home flood and must replace drywall, wood, or insulation, use these updated products when you renovate.
